Field Trial of a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network Using OpenAirInterface

Satellites enable the provision of global 5G coverage utilizing an customized protocol stack for direct access devices. This paper reports results a field trial based on Open Source Software modified Satellite Communications. New Radio functions have been adapted to support 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Networks standardization Release 17. Some currently discussed enhancements were evaluated in this study over geosynchronous spacecraft. devices and base station software-defined solutions communicating via satellite through standardized waveform. The show that implementations running general purpose platforms greatly research process 5G-Beyond. can be at early stage channel emulators or real world satellites highlight capabilities space 5G-Beyond networks. Therefore, starting point turn vision 6G protocols on-board into reality.
